Removing Rubber Base: 3 Methods Compared

We've already explained how to correctly apply Rubber Base Gel step-by-step – including standard removal with acetone. But acetone isn't the only method. Here, we compare the three most common ways to remove Rubber Base and when each is truly worthwhile.
Method 1: Acetone Soak-Off (Foil-Wrap Method)
The classic, gentlest method: roughen the surface, apply an acetone-soaked cotton pad, secure with aluminum foil, let it soak for 10-15 minutes, then gently push it off.
Advantage: Gentlest on the nail plate, no material removal by filing.
Disadvantage: Takes the longest, sometimes significantly longer with strong primers like Ultrabond.
Method 2: Electric File / E-File
With a coarse bit, the Rubber Base layer is meticulously filed down until only a very thin residual layer remains, which is then gently worked on further or briefly post-treated with acetone.
Advantage: Significantly faster, ideal for multiple refill appointments in a row.
Disadvantage: Requires practice and a steady hand – too aggressive filing can thin the natural nail.
Method 3: Combination of E-File and Acetone
In practice, this is the most frequently used method in the salon: The majority of the layer is first filed down with the e-file, and the last very thin residual layer is then completely dissolved with a short acetone soak-off (5-8 minutes instead of 15).
Advantage: Combines speed with gentleness – the most aggressive phase (coarse removal) happens mechanically and controlled, while the delicate final layer is gently removed chemically.
Disadvantage: Requires experience with both techniques.
